What is Qurbani?

A complete guide — for those learning about Qurbani for the first time, and as a reminder for those who already know.

What is Qurbani?

Qurbani (also known as Udhiyah) is the act of sacrificing a livestock animal during the days of Eid ul-Adha. It is an act of worship and obedience to Allah ﷻ, performed in remembrance of the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) by the command of Allah.

Allah ﷻ accepted this act of supreme obedience and replaced the sacrifice with a ram. In honour of this event, Muslims around the world sacrifice a permissible animal on the 10th, 11th, or 12th of Dhul Hijjah each year.

Qurbani is a Sunnah Mu'akkadah (strongly confirmed Sunnah) — many scholars hold it to be obligatory (Wajib) for every adult Muslim who possesses the nisab threshold. Consult your local scholar for specific rulings.

🕌

When is Qurbani?

Qurbani is performed on the days of Eid ul-Adha:

  • 10thDhul Hijjah — First day (most preferred)
  • 11thDhul Hijjah — Second day
  • 12thDhul Hijjah — Third day (last)

👤

Who Must Perform Qurbani?

According to the Hanafi and most other schools of fiqh, Qurbani is obligatory (Wajib) upon every adult Muslim who:

  • Is of sound mind and has reached puberty
  • Is a resident (not travelling)
  • Possesses wealth above the nisab threshold
  • Is free (not a slave)

Note: Specific rulings on Qurbani eligibility, shares, and conditions vary by madhab. Please consult a qualified Islamic scholar or your local masjid for guidance specific to your situation.

What is “Aib” (Defect) in Qurbani?

⚠️

Definition of Aib

Aib means a defect, illness, or condition that makes an animal NOT valid for Qurbani. An animal with Aib cannot be used for Qurbani, even if it was purchased and prepared. This is why physically selecting and inspecting your animal is so important.

Animals must NOT have any of the following:

Visible illness or weakness

Broken horns or missing limbs

Blindness or serious injury to the eye

Extreme thinness — animal clearly malnourished

Any disease or infection affecting the body

Limping badly (unable to walk to the slaughter area)
